It was 1997, Tony Blair arrived at number 10, Brit Pop was flying, Channel 5 launched, Katrina and The Waves had given the UK Eurovision success with ‘Love Shine a Light’ and life was good. A hot young couple with drive and ambition; one with a good eye for creative talent and style and the other a recent graduated Goldsmith from Central Saint Martins were about to venture into the world of retail and change the diamond jewellery shopping landscape forever. Jos and Alison Skeates became the proud owners of their very first jewellery boutique.

EC One (pronounced EC1) opened it’s doors on Exmouth Market; a quiet rather unknown area of Clerkenwell near the jewellery district of Hatton Garden fifteen years ago. This small boutique with a bench at the back for Jos to make commissions whilst Alison sourced unique and unknown talent quickly became the only place to go for the very best edited selection of jewellery and accessories. From hand-made bespoke engagement and wedding rings to directional and quirky Perspex oversized pieces and lots in-between, EC One gained a reputation as a must-visit destination boutique for those with an eclectic taste for jewellery and design. To this day EC One is still known for launching and giving a platform to so many jewellery designers the industry now holds in such high esteem.

Following on from the immediate success, EC One moved to a bigger location on Exmouth Market (where the store still sits today) and a boutique in London’s most stylish shopping mecca Notting Hill. Set off the main drag of Westbourne Grove, the Notting Hill store is in good company with Matches, JW Beeton and Ottolenghi all in close proximity. Over the years both stores have won numerous awards such as ‘Boutique Retailer of The Year’, first place as an ‘Inspiring Independent’ and won the title ‘Great Little Shop’ by The London Magazine – is it any wonder EC One were included in Professional Jeweller’s Hot 100.

This November, EC One celebrate 15 successful years as the UK’s only place to go for unique jewellery; cleverly sourced, brilliantly merchandised and housed within two beautiful boutiques in Central London. No birthday is complete without a celebration. To mark the event, EC One have created an exciting new limited edition collection. ‘Lyrical’ combines Jos and Alison’s love of music with the skill of the in-house workshop. Who doesn’t love a good song lyric? Beautifully carved silver lettering from some of the best songs ever written, housed on stunning eye-popping coloured chain ensure EC One triumph again with a piece of jewellery everyone will want to get their hands on. ‘Lyric’ is sure to be seen on the most stylish necks and wrists. From the store that has inspired so many jewellery trends comes another one and secures EC One’s place as the only place to go for the next 15 years and beyond for the best in jewellery and innovative design.
