Neely Quinn May 1, 2013Asilver – Make sure you record what you’re eating now on a normal diet in myfitnesspal.com or something similar online. Get a baseline for calories. Then make sure you match that on Paleo and you should be fine. If you start losing weight, start adding calories, and in particular, carbs. Having experimented with the paleo style diet, I can say that it has worked for me and continues to be a filter to judge what I put in my mouth. While I believe that there is lots of marketing hype to sell books and advice, there is positive evidence that our bodies are better adapted to lean meats and veggies then bagels and ice cream. We evolved to be opportunistic eaters and crave the carbs that would keep us through the winter. There are just too many opportunities for our bodies to handle right now. "The difficulty is putting the theory into practice," she says. For example, by cutting out dairy you put yourself at risk of not consuming enough calcium. Oh lord, another “diet.” I know, it sounds like a fad/marketing ploy, but it’s actually quite legit. You see, tens of thousands of years ago, before Nike, Cap’n Crunch, and Healthy Choice meals, our ancient ancestors thrived as hunter-gatherers. Although it’s been a really long time, our genetics haven’t changed that much since then. Hunter-gatherer diets have been argued to maintain relatively high levels of monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats, moderate levels of saturated fats (10–15% of total food energy) as well as a low omega-6:omega-3 fatty acid ratio. Cows fed a grass-based diet produce significant amounts of omega-3 fatty acids compared to grain-fed animals, while minimizing trans fats and saturated fats. The diet does include a significant amount of cholesterol due to the inclusion of lean meat. These nutritional factors may serve to inhibit the development of cardiovascular disease. This high ratio of polyunsaturated to saturated fats has been challenged. While a low saturated fat intake was argued for it has been argued that hunter-gatherers would selectively hunt fatter animals and utilise the fattiest parts of the animals (such as bone marrow). Tracy May 4, 2013I am on week 3 of the Paleo diet….and I fel amazing. !!!! My energy level is much higher than before and I went from 216 lbs to 204 lbs in the three weeks I have been following the diet. I am CRAVING sweets (cake, cookies, pastry, chocolate) in a horrible way, But can now see the results and am going to avoid those foods. Maybe every other Sunday, I can have a treat to reward my hard work? I am a little worried about my blood labs, years ago when I was on Atkins, I was depleted in potassium and was hospitalized for that….Just wondering if this is going to happen again? It really depends on your size and activity level, but you might expect to lose a couple pounds per week, probably more in the beginning. Please email me (I’m the Paleo Plan nutritionist) if you have any other questions at neely@paleoplan.com.
